Technical Information: T1 Lines

The North American telephone network is built in a modular and hierachical fashion. At the lowest level you find the retail package: A single telephone line. When you need a bigger package, you buy them by the case: 24 telephone lines make a T1 circuit.

T1 circuits are a common way to connect a business customer to the local telephone company's switch (also known as "the central office"). They are also used between central offices, and the same type of "fat pipe" circuit can be used for various forms of data communication.

This page will help you understand T1 circuits.
